Camera Compatibility

This post is going to be built over time, but here is where you can find out about how well a particular camera works with iMovie '08. Don't see a camera here? Email me or comment with your questions or experience about a camera so I can add it.

AVCHD Cameras:
HDV Cameras:
  • More coming
Mini DV Cameras:
  • All Mini DV cameras that work in previous iMovie versions should work in iMovie '08.
DVD Cameras
  • More coming
Still Cameras with video:
  • It appears that video from still cameras will work as long as they play in Quicktime. You can find these videos in the iPhoto section of the iMovie Event Browser.
Other Cameras:
You can find Apple's official information on supported cameras here:

I can confirm that the Sony DCR-DVD803e work flawlessly. The files imported from the DVD Camcorder even include the 5.1DD information. Shame that iMovie can't use that but at least it is saved within the events for perhaps a future version.

Sanyo Xacti HD2 crashes imovie 08 when imovie detects the camera for importing video.

do you have any information about the sony dcr dvd103. i am having trouble transferring files and wonder if they should be stored as vob or mpeg files on my camcorder before trying to transfer them to imovie.

I had a nice surprise today!
With My MacPro (Intel only I believe!) I was able to import my old MicroMV tapes. iMovie believes it is HDV. It is super hyper duper cool, so now I found a new life for my Sony DCR-IP5 and most of all I am able to say my 5 years old movies on my Mac, which I never imported...

I can confirm that the Canon HG10 works well with iMovie 08. It's a hard drive based AVCHD cam, and the clips import flawlessly so far.

Can anyone tell me which type of camera will import the fastest... in other words, faster than real time if that's possible?
I'm just starting to shop for a camera so I can learn how to use imovie.
    Thanks!

I can import movies from a Sony DCR HC48 using iMovie '04, but I can't with iMovie '08.

This is a MiniDV camera, btw.

    Not much of an upgrade.

I'm having troubles with imovie 7.1.1 (08) importing video from my Sony DCR-HC96. The camera shows iLink out so the firewire connection is up but I don't get a pop up of the import window. I have not tried this with any previous iMovie software so not sure of the problem. Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Michael
